A Microneedling facial, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatment that utilizes tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin.
The procedure utilizes a vibrating pen that is used in circular motions to create tiny, controlled-depth injuries to the surface of your skin to promote even healing and collagen reproduction.
This treatment is used for maintenance collagen induction, meaning to continue stimulating the skin to heal. It can also be used to lessen the appearance of acne scars. When anti-aging serums are incorporated into the treatment, this treatment can be used to promote further skin elasticity and plumpness for more youthful looking skin. When anti-hyperpigmentation serums are incorporated into the treatment, microneedling facials can be used to improve skin pigmentation.
This stimulates the body’s natural healing process, resulting in increased collagen production, improved skin texture, and reduced appearance of scars, wrinkles, and fine lines.
Contrary to popular opinion or what patients may have experienced in the past, deep incisions are not necessary to obtain effects from microneedling.
Microneedling does require maintenance therapy to continue benefits of the treatment, with many providers suggesting repeat treatments at approximately 3-6 months after their initial treatment. More aggressive treatment protocols call for one microneedling treatment every 30 days for 3 months before proceeding to every 6 months-1 year for maintenance treatments.
Microneedling facials can target various skin concerns, including acne scars, wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin texture.
Common treatment areas include the face, neck, décolletage, and other areas affected by skin imperfections. Microneedling is an excellent treatment option to treat scar tissue anywhere on the body, especially new scar tissue with a red undertone.
Ideal candidates for microneedling facial are individuals looking to improve skin texture, tone, and firmness without undergoing surgery.
The ideal candidate has normal-good quality skin integrity. Patients with very poor skin integrity do tend to have increased bruising from this procedure and may benefit from more aggressive laser resurfacing treatments to regenerate their skin. Ideal candidates are able to not take potent blood thinners prior to the procedure and can stay out of the sun for 3-5 days after their procedure. Patients on accutane should not receive a microneedling treatment.
Candidates may have concerns related to acne scars, wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, or uneven skin texture. They are willing to work with their provider to construct a skincare treatment plan, and are open to multiple treatments, rather than wanting one treatment to fix all of their skincare concerns.
Candidates with a history of hypertrophic scar or keloid reaction to any treatment are not ideal candidates for microneedling.
The procedure typically takes approximately 45-60 minutes to complete, depending on the size of the treatment area and desired results. Prior to treatment, your provider will apply numbing cream to the treated area. This process takes 30 minutes. The treatment itself lasts approximately 15-30 minutes depending on the area being treated.
Patients may be advised to avoid certain skincare products or medications that can increase the risk of skin irritation before the procedure. Patients are asked to use a new cleanser on their face and to apply sunscreen for the first 3-5 days after their procedure. While some patients may peel after the procedure, this is not common. Patients are asked to avoid the sun, or to wear sunscreen if obtaining more than 10 minutes of exposure to the sun, even when driving to a location or sitting inside their home next to a window.
The procedure takes about 20-30 minutes. Some things you can do to prepare for your PRP injection treatment for hair loss are to avoid medications that stop platelets from working, such as Aspirin, Aleve, and Ibuprofen/Motrin for 2 days prior, and to avoid drinking more than one alcoholic beverage the night before your injectable treatment. Taking arnica tablets ahead of your treatment will reduce bruising.
On the day of your procedure, your provider will review any allergies, active issues that will change your treatment pattern, and any potential contraindications to your PRP hair loss treatment. Your provider will also give you an estimated pricing for your treatment plan.
After treatment, your provider may ask you not to wash your treated area for 24-36 hours. Following this, your provider may ask you to take a hot shower to help improve perfusion to the treated area prior to a gentle shampoo cleanse of the treated area. Patients can resume normal activities immediately afterward. Care should be taken not to flatten recently injected areas, and not to place dirty objects near recently injected areas (such as dirty pillowcases when sleeping at night).Krista Reid Belton has been a registered nurse for over 9 years.
